An Introduction to INDIE DELIGHTS…
A wise philosopher called Toto once said “music isn’t a phase, it’s a way of life.” We’re not sure what this means, but what we do know is that Indie Delights gave birth to its first club night on Easter Monday 2003. Like the Stone Roses infamous gig at Spike Island, 200 people were there but thousands have said they were there.
The name itself, Indie Delights, originated from a series of blistering compilation CDs created and distributed by Sig Doherty. These much sought-after CDs included many of his own favourite indie anthems from the Rolling Stones, to the Stone Roses, from Blur to the Killers and everything in between. A host of well-received CDs were soon passing from relative to friend, with each new Indie Delights compilation hotly anticipated.
Ever since the Bound For Boston finally called a halt to its Indie Discos at the end of the 1990s, there has been a massive gap in the market for somewhere in Derry where the not-so-young can dance the night away to some good ole rock’n’roll. With this big city drowning in a sea of dance music, R’n’B , thick gold chains and mullet hair-cuts, we decided it was time for a change.
With no experience whatsoever, but plenty of hope and energy the Doherty Bros decided to promote a night of their own. We approached Billy and Kevin from the Dungloe Bar and struck the kinda deal you only see done in the Sopranos. “Build it and they will come” a wizened Steve Doc enthused. And indeed they did. Our first night was packed to the rafters (almost exclusively with family & friends – you all know who you are and thank you).
Despite (or because of!) some early embarrassing teething problems with the sound system, we received a wave of enthusiastic response from the local press (good work Alan, Rosey, Cooper). Our monthly club nights became renowned and we grew from strength to strength thanks to the DJs (Sig, Lantern Jazz, Jay, Dave McDaid), the mad-for-it crowd – “one more choon! One more choon!” and of course our patent-pending world famous bouncing dance floor (don’t tell Health & Safety!)
